TOM JOHNSON is the new Worcestershire county snooker champion for 2012.
The finals were held at Pockets in Kidderminster on Sunday 1st April.
4 players qualified for the finals, Tom Johnson from our Evesham league,Matt Emms and Andy Smith from Kidderminster and Scott Carmichael from the Redditch league.
In the semi finals Johnson played Emms while Smith played Carmichael.
Johnson won his semi by 4-1including a 64 break, although the threat of a comeback was always there by Emms who himself made a superb 68 break.
Tom's all round play was too strong for his opponent.
In the other semi final Andy Smith(former England junior international) dispatched Scott Carmichael by the sme 4-1scoreline, highlited with a 58 clearance to pinch the first and a 103 clearance to win the 3rd frame.
The final was of the highest quality with Johnson taking an early lead only for Smith to reply with his 2nd century of the day,a brilliant 106 clearance to edge 2-1 up.
Smith continued and took a 3-2 lead in the best of 7 encounter only for Johnson to level the scores and force a decider courtesy of a 41 and a 20+ break.
The final frame was tight to start but some brilliant single ball potting from both players ended with Smith taking a 32 point lead with 2 reds remaining and a tricky red along the cushion from middle distance being Tom's last chance.
In it went, perfect on the pink and that was followed by the final red and all the colours to the black in flawless fashion.
Black ball for game, using the rest and with the object ball just off the cushion between middle and bottom pocket, cue ball in the middle of the table just to the left of the blue spot.
Tom held his nerve to pot the black for a sensational 39 clearance and the title in one of the best county matches seen for a while.
Our congratulations go out to Tom Johnson as 2012 county champion .
The county billiards title is also securely in Evesham as well so just the Interleague to make it a clean sweep of regional events for 2012.(i bet the mayans didn't predict that!) |
